The Sports Awards are held every year and give us a chance to highlight some of our teams and individuals successes from the 2013-2014 season. This year, for the first time ever, we moved the awards ceremony to the O2 Guildhall Southampton – one of city’s most prestigious venues – and we organised an exclusive private-after party at Myth. The 2014 Sports Awards were without a doubt, our most successful yet, where 520 guests joined us on the night!
We were honoured that current Scottish Premiership Club Manager of Hibernian FC, Terry Butcher, gave an inspirational speech to all our athletes in which he did a fantastic job!
BBC South Today presenter, Tony Husband, was the Compere for the event for the second year running and wowed the crowd as he did last year, and he even attempted to break a Sport Solent Selfie record by trying to get everyone in the room, and himself in shot!
We started the night with a complimentary glass of fizz on arrival, and photos taken by student photographers, Severyn Szymaszek and Zoe Downing. After all teams had arrived and been seated, it was time to start the ceremony, where we begun by re-presenting and congratulating teams and individuals who had won various awards throughout the season.
After that, our sponsor, James Huffman of Creative Images awarded a number of third years with their Colours, well deserved for their effort and involvement in their respective teams.
Next up it was time for the Main Awards to take place, where certain outstanding individuals and teams took to the stage to be presented with their awards. We had a number of individual categories from, Absolute Running Male and Female Newcomer of the Year to Sports Man and Sports Woman of the Year! Our team awards included, Club of the Year, Outstanding Sporting Achievement and Team of the Year to name a few!
We also introduced a brand new award called Rising Star of the Year to highlight the success of one athlete on our Southampton Talented Athlete Scheme (STAS). The winner of this award was runner, Oliver Bromby!
The team that stole the night, was without a doubt Team Solent Ladies FC, who graced the stage on three separate occasions in total, after being re-presented their BUCS trophy, and then going on to win Team of the Year and Outstanding Sporting Achievement of the Year! The Ladies have had their best season ever this year so truly deserved all the recognition their received.
Thank you to all of our guests, staff, and to Tony Husband and Terry Butcher for making our event a success!
